In August, Allies hosted a lunch-and-learn event on record sealing for clients living with HIV as well as case managers who wanted to learn about the process. The event was organized by Amber Tindall, an intern in the client services department. Melissa Evans from Neighborhood Legal Services facilitated the program.
Thirteen clients and several case managers attended and learned about expungements and record sealing.
Allies case managers worked with their clients who could benefit from these legal services and provided transportation support as needed.
“We are grateful for everyone’s hard work and commitment to assisting our clients seal their judicial records and have more freedom and access to employment and housing,” said Christy Owens, senior director of programs at Allies.
Allies patients and clients have another opportunity to access legal services from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 260 Forbes Ave., Suite 1800, downtown. McGuire Woods and PNC are partnering with Allies to provide healthcare planning documents and wills. This is the third year for this program.
“We regularly hear from clients who want or need wills and advance directives but lack access to these services,” Owens said. “This is a valuable opportunity for our clients, and it requires a true team effort to make it successful.”
Available services at the October event include:
- Wills
- Power of Attorney
- Advance Directives, including:
- Preferences regarding pain management and sedation
- Resuscitation wishes
- Other healthcare decision-making instructions
Those wishing to attend should call Deborah Newsome-Moultrie at 412-834-3343 by Monday, Oct. 5. Allies clients also can talk with their case manager to sign up. Lunch and transportation assistance will be provided.
